When Google first released Gmail it was fresh, new a completely different way to access email, then came Inbox by Google another fresh new way to look at email. Sadly Inbox came and went, but some of the cool features made their way into the main product. Now Gmail has been given a massive new redesign focusing on bringing all Google’s collaboration and communication services into one clean interface.
When Google announced it’s new design for Gmail they called it a “better home for work”, maybe playing on the fact that during the launch almost everybody was working from home due to COVID-19. For the most part, the interface will look and feel very familiar, but Google has integrated all of its communication tools, such as Google Meet, Google Chats, files, and even tasks. Users will hopefully become more productive as they access all of these tools more easily and from within Gmail interface itself.
According to Google, “We’re also enhancing the collaboration features in Chat rooms by adding shared files and tasks, making rooms an even better solution for longer-term projects. With quick access to shared chat, important documents, and to-dos in one place, it’s easier for everyone in a group to stay on the same page. Plus, Chat lets you create rooms that include people outside your company, like contractors or consultants, so your group can be not only cross-functional but also cross-organizational.”
