GAT Labs vs BetterCloud for Google Workspace (2026)

By Patronum

November 06, 2026

Read Time: 7 mins

GAT Labs and BetterCloud both manage Google Workspace, but they start from different places. GAT Labs is a Google Workspace suite that leads with auditing and security, adds lifecycle automation (GAT Flow) in its Admin plan, and publishes per-user prices. BetterCloud is a multi-SaaS management platform with a Google Workspace module, sold as modules on custom quotes. If you only run Google Workspace and want deep audit plus workflows at a published price, GAT Labs is the closer fit; if you manage many SaaS apps from one place, BetterCloud is.

Patronum publishes this comparison and covers its own option briefly at the end. Everything else comes from each vendor’s own website, read on 5 November 2026. This is a documentation review, not hands-on testing.

GAT Labs vs BetterCloud: the short version

“Documented” means the vendor’s own site describes it. “Not confirmed” means not established in the sources reviewed, which doesn’t mean the product lacks it.

What is GAT Labs?

GAT Labs sells a suite of Google Workspace tools in five stacked plans. Essential is GAT+, the auditing base: dashboards, alert rules, third-party app auditing and domain-wide search across Drive files and email. Essential + adds GAT Unlock (multi-party approval for sensitive admin actions such as silent access to files and email) and signatures. Admin adds GAT Flow and Flow HR for user lifecycle workflows. Secure and Sentinel add Shield and Shield+ for Chrome browser monitoring and identity checks.

What is BetterCloud?

BetterCloud describes itself as a SaaS management platform. Its pricing page sells modules, including User Automation, Spend Optimization and Workspace Management for Google, and File Governance has its own page and trial. The Google module promises “Granular controls for your Google Workspace”, “Visibility and automation of Google Lifecycle Management”, bulk user updates, email signature enforcement and Shared Drive and My Drive security.

The draw is breadth: workflows span Google Workspace and other apps.

How do they compare on offboarding?

GAT Labs documents its offboarding actions in detail. Its knowledge base lists actions you can combine in one GAT Flow workflow (Admin plan and up), including:

  • Email: remove or move delegation, set auto-forwarding, set up an auto reply, migrate emails
  • Drive and Calendar: transfer calendar events, remove calendar access, change folder and Shared Drive permissions
  • Security: force sign-out, revoke app tokens, delete 2-Step Verification backup codes and app-specific passwords, change password
  • Devices and licenses: wipe mobile devices, change Google license assignment
  • Google Vault: set a hold, create an export, remove a user from a hold
  • Final step: suspend, archive or delete the user

Every workflow goes to a Security Officer for approval unless pre-approval is set up. The same page warns that for the Offboarding workflow type, “Selected accounts will be deleted if workflow ends with success,” even though suspend and archive also appear as final actions. That warning is about that workflow type, so before buying, ask GAT Labs what your chosen workflow type and final action do to the account.

BetterCloud’s Google pages are less specific. They document delegating a departing user’s email, automating “access to Google Groups, ownership of key files in Google Drive,” setting out-of-office replies and suspending or deleting accounts in bulk. Before buying, ask BetterCloud for its Google Workspace action list and confirm the steps you need, such as license changes, device wipes and Vault holds.

How do they compare on Drive security and auditing?

Auditing is GAT Labs’ strength. Every plan, from Essential ($16 per user per year), includes live Drive and email audits, one-click search for documents shared inside or outside the domain, and sharing policies created from search results. Bulk actions, such as ownership changes across many owners’ files, start at Essential + ($20 per user per year).

BetterCloud File Governance (custom quote) covers My Drive and Shared Drives in one dashboard, with bulk unsharing, removing access for old vendors and stopping shares with personal email addresses. It can “alert end-users before their files are unshared.” BetterCloud’s Google integration page also mentions content scanning for sensitive data such as credit card numbers.

How does pricing compare?

GAT Labs publishes prices. On 5 November 2026, yearly billing per user was Essential $16, Essential + $20, Admin $24, Secure $34 and Sentinel $48. The page bills in USD for the US and Canada and in euros for all other regions, and shows the same figures with both symbols. Monthly plans cost more and exclude email support and training. Check these terms before you budget:

  • Match the plan to the job. Offboarding automation (GAT Flow) starts at Admin, $24 per user per year. Bulk Drive actions start at Essential +, $20. The $16 Essential plan is audit only.
  • You pay for every active user. GAT Labs says subscriptions “must cover all active users on your domain” and can’t be bought for admins only.
  • Small domains have a minimum, and the page gives two. It states both a “$500 minimum annual charge” and “a minimum charge of $800 per domain per year” for small domains. Ask GAT Labs which applies to you.
  • Prices change on January 1, 2027. The page says new pricing takes effect then and that buying before December 31, 2026 secures current rates.
  • Limitation: “GAT Unlock and GAT Flow are not available during trials,” so you can’t trial the offboarding workflows yourself.

BetterCloud publishes no price for its Google Workspace modules. The page says pricing “reflects your license count, connected apps, chosen modules, and any add-ons.” If lifecycle work is your goal, ask for one quote covering Workspace Management for Google and User Automation, plus File Governance if you need Drive cleanup. Until you have that quote, the public pages can’t tell you which product is cheaper.

If neither fits

Some Google Workspace teams don’t need a security suite or a multi-SaaS platform, just joiners, leavers, Drive sharing and signatures handled the same way every time. That’s what Patronum does.

In the Patronum console, you build a policy, choose who it applies to (all users, an organizational unit or a Google Group) and add conditions such as Last Sign In, End Date or Suspended. Offboarding actions include transferring Drive files to a manager or a Shared Drive, removing the user from Google Groups, transferring calendars, setting a vacation responder and suspending the account. A new policy stays inactive until you activate it, then runs hourly by default. For an urgent exit, Emergency Offboard runs a preconfigured offboarding policy against one user.

If you add conditions to a policy, make sure they still cover every leaver you intend it to catch.

Drive policies that unshare externally or link-shared files are part of Patronum Plus, at $16 per user per year (Patronum Help). There’s a 30-day free trial with no credit card.

How to decide

Pick GAT Labs if you’re Google-only and auditing matters as much as automation; pick BetterCloud if Google Workspace is one of many apps you manage together. Then validate with a synthetic test user and a few representative sample files, in a trial or a vendor-led demo, before you sign. Don’t make a real departing employee your first test: these workflows can delete accounts.

  • Write down the 10 offboarding steps your team does today
  • Create a test user with sample files, group memberships and a calendar, and ask each vendor to run every step on it, including Vault holds and license changes (for GAT Flow this has to be a vendor demo, since Flow is excluded from trials)
  • For GAT Labs, ask what your chosen workflow type and final action do to the account, and confirm the plan that includes Flow, your region’s billing currency and which small-domain minimum applies
  • Ask both vendors to demonstrate the same restricted HR operator role running the flow
  • For BetterCloud, get a written quote that names the modules you need
  • Test the approval path, then confirm what happens when a step fails and where the log shows it
